How often do people stop and ask themselves “Why am I doing this?” (try it sometime with something mundane, it’s especially weird), before we get too contemplative, you should really check out the fantastic TED Talk below.

It’s from Simon Sinek, a marketing consultant, who developed the Golden Circle of What, How and Why. His aptly titled book – “It Starts With Why” explores the concept and illustrates how understanding why we do something is the linchpin to inspiring action. His TED talk gives you a cliff notes version. We highly recommend both.

Check out Simon Sinek’s website here.

Red Dog Air is a small toy company with REALLY big ideas. The began, however, with a simple one: create a high-quality, portable toy airport set for young aviation enthusiasts.

They came to us to help them build not only their brand and website, but the look and feel of their toys as well. It’s been a truly fantastic relationship, one that will surely grow in 2011 as we continue to add all kinds of bells and whistles! But we wanted to our work up to this point. Below you’ll find the logo, the front and back of the actual airport set, the website, and the interactive cockpit, which is going to get a whole lot cooler in the coming year. The cockpit was designed to enhance the play experience of the physical airport set, rather than have the kid sitting in front of a computer screen for hours on end. The whole project has been a blast and we really liked to idea of being a part of something that helps fuel the imagination of children.

Click on the thumbs to enlarge or you can see the website here, we also helped design their blog, twitter, and you tube channel.

BamSmash provides bands and musicians with solutions that blend social media strategies, ticketing, digital fan clubs & VIP access to create the ultimate fan experience. They contacted us to help them design a fan club site for pop artist Sean Kingston.

This was a fun project. First off we had excellent source material. We took A LOT of inspiration from Sean Kingston’s website (check it out here, it’s awesome), then pulled in some Old-School, 80’s Hip Hop, inspired flavor (see gold chain), and then threw in some of Sean’s unique heritage (see flags). Once we had the design done, we handed it over to long-time collaborator VLT, who supplied the back-end development.

We were pleased with the end result and so is the client, we hope Sean’s fan’s enjoy it as much as we enjoyed designing it.

Click on the image below to imbiggun! Or visit the live site here, although you have to join to view most of the content.

See the real Aron Ralston describe/re-enact his own amputation

Although I haven’t seen the movie 127 Hours yet (It’s on the short list), I’m very familiar with the story of Aron Ralston, the hiker who cut off his own arm in order to free himself from the boulder under which said arm was pinned.

The movie looks pretty fantastic. It’s directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire/28 Days Later/Trainspotting), and I read where he used incredibly long takes, sometimes 20 to 30 minutes, to allow James Franco, who’s playing Ralston, to really explore his predicament. He then would go back and cherry pick the best moments from those takes and cut them together, which is IMHO a stroke of real genius. Can’t wait to see it.

I remembered watching Ralston share his story with Tom Brokaw and just how amazing it was. Below is a 6 minute clip where he describes, in detail, his own amputation. It’s very moving.

So a little shameless self promotion, but promotion nonetheless. This year we, along with about a thousand other companies, dove into the world of App development. Spark Crowd came to us to help them with an idea for a VERY intriguing game/app that helps people meet other people in “real life“, not just in the digital one.

We were all over it! So we partnered with them and have literally helped with nearly every phase of the application, although the majority of it revolves around the brand and design. It’s an ongoing process, that will no doubt see many changes, but we’re excited about where this may go in 2011. We’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime you can learn more about the game here.

I’ve shared some screenshots from version 1 below, but to see it live please download the game (right now it’s only available for iPhone) by going to the app store and searching for Name Tag Game.

Click on the thumbs to embiggun’.
