Real talk from on small business from someone who’s done it . . .

If you know who Jason Fried is then you’ve been there done that. But if you don’t know who he is then you probably have no idea who David Heineimeier Hansson is. Well they’re behind 37 Signals, who’s behind Basecamp, the web-based project management tool that’s revolutionized more than the project management universe and Mr Hansson is the developer who essentially built it (and Ruby on Rails BTW).

These guys are WAY ahead of the curve, ALWAYS. Mr Hansson recently gave a lecture at Standford University’s Entrepreneurship Corner, entitled “Unlearn Your MBA” – and in it, there’s some serious pearls about starting/running your own small business. I’ve embedded it below, but for some reason it loads like a video, but it’s only “audio”, so don’t let the still video frame fool you.

The 37 Signals guys have also written a book that arrives in a view days, called “Rework” learn more about it here.

Their first book “Getting Real” was about building web applications and it was available primarily as a download. Like I said – ahead of the curve.

So I’ve watched this about 100 times over the last 2 years, when I realized I’ve never shared it, well that’s not true, I’ve shared it with clients, colleagues, & friends. I just haven’t shared it with the 5 people who read this blog. AnyWHO, Gary Vaynerchuck, started Wine Library TV, after getting a bit bored running his family’s chain of liquor and wine stores, which helped him grow the family business from $4M to $60 in just 5 years. Now he’s the poster child for social media age. So, if you want to (a) learn about why & how social media works or (b) re-fire your passion for your business, this is the place to start. It’s awesome.

Learn more about him here.

I also recommend his book – “Now is the Time to Crush It” – get it here.

Not that anything more has to be said – but this came from an MTV Music Awards Show a few years back, where they had all these cool bands playing together in hotel rooms. The sad part is they mostly only showed them going in and out of commercials, so you didn’t get to see all the performance, which was probably just to drive traffic to MTV’s website where you could watch them after sitting thru 15 commercials of course.

Which brings up another point, I hate when the commercial that plays before the video I want to watch loads and plays PERFECT, then for some strange reason, the video I WANT to see won’t load – here’s a novel concept, whatever tech you’re using to play the commercial flawlessly, use that on the actual video. (Stepping off soapbox now)

As I was saying this cover is AWESOME – check it out -
